The World Health Organization has put its stamp of approval on taxing sugary drinks.

Officials say the taxes can help reduce obesity, type 2 diabetes and tooth decay.

The agency says taxes that raise the retail price at least 20 percent significantly cut consumption.

Obesity has more than doubled around the world since 1980, and the number of people with diabetes has nearly quadrupled.
