Tire fire erupts in Cumberland County

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - December 23, 2007 Thick acrid smoke poured from the fire in Cumberland County, as thousands of tires burned at Griner Tire, on Elmer Road in Fairfield Township.

Fifty-five fire units from several communities joined the overnight battle.

Neighbors say the tire dump has been a concern, for years.

The Department of Environmental Protection has not issued any health alerts.

Months ago, township officials reportedly ordered the owner to get the tire dump in line with regulations or it would be closed down by the end of this year.

There are still some hot spots being monitored.
