Providence rolls over Rutgers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - January 9, 2008

Geoff McDermott scored seven points and added game-high totals of eight rebounds and eight assists for the Friars (10-5, 1-2 Big East).

JR Inman was high scorer for Rutgers (8-8, 0-3 Big East) with 11 points as the Scarlet Knights dropped their third game in a row.

The Friars held the Scarlet Knights to just two field goals on 20 attempts in the second half. Rutgers shot just 32 percent for the game on 14-of-44 shooting.

Providence also outscored Rutgers in the paint, 44-14. The Friars scored 23 points off 18 Rutgers turnovers.

The first half featured five lead changes and one tie. An Inman layup put Rutgers ahead 16-9, then Providence regained the lead, 17-16, on two McDermott free throws.

Providence led 35-34 at the half and continued to surge ahead with Rutgers unable to make a field goal for almost 12 minutes during one stretch.

A McKenzie drive put Providence ahead, 76-46 with 3:31 to go.
