Still no charges on trooper rape claim

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) - February 9, 2008 They're suspended from their jobs but neither charged with a crime nor cleared.

Robert Ebberup, a lawyer for one of the suspended troopers, calls the situation ridiculous.

Ebberup suspects investigators want to make sure they get it right -- and not have an embarrassment like in the rape accusations nearly two years ago against three Duke University lacrosse players.

In that case, the players were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

Some experts say the time without charges is not a cause for alarm. But another says it could be a sign of a botched investigation.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan says he won't comment on the case because the investigation is ongoing.
