Boys struck by school bus

WEST PHILADELPHIA - March 14, 2008 A witness told Action News reporter John Rawlins that the boys were riding a bicycle near 54th and Arch Street. One of the boys was pedaling, while the other was riding on the handle bars.

The witness said around 4:40 p.m., a William Penn school bus traveling south hit the boys and dragged them for some distance into a parked truck.

"The boys flew off the bike and the bus ran over both of them. That when I saw that they were hurt," said Jalil Hill.

The two boys, whose family members say are cousins, were rushed to Children's Hospital.

Ten-year-old Wikie Johnson was listed in stable condition with a leg injury.

Eight-year-old Kyishen Sanders was listed in critical but stable condition with a head injury.

"He was really bad, but you could see he was a fighter because his little legs were moving," said Cookie Wright.

The bus was carrying students from the Wordsworth Academy in Fort Washington. No one on the bus was injured.

Parents arrived at the scene and began taking their kids home as investigators tried to figure what happened. Right now, they say it appears to be simply an accident.

Officials with the bus company and the bus driver had no comment. Police do not expect any charges against the driver.
