Drexel: $14 million grant for autism research

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - April 6, 2008

The grant will allow Drexel's School of Public Health to research risk factors for autism in expectant mothers and their babies.

The school plans to set up a national network of research sites, interview expectant mothers and follow their children until age 3.

Craig Newschaffer, chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics, wants to explore possible environmental and genetic risk factors. He believes that autism begins during fetal development.
