Second TB case at Bensalem High School

BENSALEM, Pa. - April 16, 2008 Students in Bensalem received the official word this morning.

TB is a bacterial disease that can attack the lungs and if untreated can be fatal. Officials don't think the two Bensalem cases are linked.

There is no evidence the first patient, a 14-year-old freshman, and the second patient, who is in a higher grade, had the prolonged direct contact needed for the disease to spread.

Officials have already tested close friends of the first patient and plan to test an additional 150 to 200 more who are close to the second patient.

The school planned to send letters home Wednesday to inform parents about the latest case.

School officials plan a TB information session with county health department officials at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Bensalem High School auditorium.
