Anger after bullet hits school bus

WILMINGTON, DEL. - June 6, 2008 Ricky Burnett says his 9 year old daughter will never forget what happened Thursday. The 3rd grader was the only child on the school bus when it was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle.

"You know how it is for a kid, it kind of traumatizes them for a minute," Burnette told Action News.

And, many are traumatized and angered by the brazen shooting. People like Luis Lugo who could have been sitting on his porch when a bullet struck the for sale sign on his house, and a window pane near his patio furniture. Wilmington City Councilman Kevin Kelley reacted to the violence. "We could have had a fatality," he said, "We could have had several fatalities, because of some knuckleheads using their stupidity to start shooting up the street in broad daylight."

Resident Blanca Martinez added, "The police gotta do something about this, have more police around checking everybody."

Police say it was the bus driver who ordered Burnett's daughter and two adult passengers to get down while the shots were being fired. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance but was treated and released for minor cuts from the broken glass.

Burnett said he was thankful, not only that his daughter wasn't hurt, but also that no other children were on the bus and no one was seriously hurt.

Police have not identified the shooters or the motive behind the shooting. The investigation continues.
