Underground FEMA fuel tanks could leak

WASHINGTON (AP) - August 13, 2008 The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Delaware tank sites include Wilmington and Georgetown.

The Associated Press has learned FEMA has known since at least the 1990s that tanks under its supervision could be leaking fuel into soil and groundwater.

The agency says it knows of 150 underground tanks that must be inspected for leaks. FEMA also is investigating if 124 other tanks are underground or above ground and if they're leaking.

A state-by-state look at the locations of underground fuel-storage tanks that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is studying to look for possible leaks. There could be more than one tank at each location. FEMA is inspecting tanks in 220 cities in 48 states and Guam, plus the District of Columbia. FEMA would not provide exact locations of these tanks.
