Hundreds take a leap off a bridge

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - October 20, 2008

Hundreds of people did just that over the weekend.

Once a year, skydivers are allowed to parachute from the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia.

It's nearly 880 feet high.

Officials say more than 400 jumpers registered to parachute off the bridge, while 22 teams of climbers signed up to rappel from its sides.

Thousands more simply walked across.

Organizer Cindy Dragan says this year's Bridge Day crowd was even bigger than last year's estimate of 155,000.
