Former Rep. Bill Houghton dies after illness

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - October 21, 2008 Houghton was 81 when he died Monday after a long illness.

The former New Castle County sheriff and World War II Navy soldier retired in 2004 after 22 years in the House representing the New Castle area and south Wilmington.

Former state representative Herman Holloway Jr. called Houghton a "very fine gentleman" and said he worked hard in his district and was very loving and jovial.

Gilligan says Houghton didn't make an enemy in 20 years and never went back on his word.
