What is "La Nina"?

La Nina is essentially the opposite of El Nino.

Erica's Answer:

The water off the western coast of equatorial South America is cooler than average during a La Nina event.

In order to officially say a La Nina is taking place, the ocean must be at least 0.5 degrees Celsius cooler than normal. A typical La Nina event lasts between 9-12 months, though sometimes La Nina events have been known to last as long as 2 years!
