Homeless man dies in tent fire

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) - February 3, 2009 Authorities are trying to confirm the man's identity.

The victim, believed to be in his 60s, was severely burned when his tent caught fire Sunday evening.

Authorities say witnesses reported two explosions. Police say the man had a propane tank in the tent for heat and cooking.

It was the first death from a fire in the five homeless camps in Lakewood and Toms River since advocates started handing out the tanks.

Lakewood's committee plans to give a $50,000 grant to a nonprofit housing agency to clear out the camps and help the homeless into living assistance and rehabilitation programs.
