Arrest in violent robberies at ATM

PHILADELPHIA - February 4, 2009 - 40-year-old Wendell Cox of Marshall Street in Philadelphia was arrested Wednesday after he arrived at Episcopal Hospital. There, police were told that a man they were looking for was seated in the emergency department.

Those officers went to the e.r. and saw Cox, who they identify as the man in the robbery video.

Cox is charged with two robberies.

The first happened on the afternoon of Sunday, January 4th at an ATM machine at 6th and Spring Garden Streets.

A woman was at the machine when police say Cox approached her and asked for the time. When the money came out, police say Cox bumped her out of the way, pulled a knife on her and then told the woman to start running.

Police say he got away with $100 in cash and the woman's ATM card.

On the evening of Friday, January 23rd, police say a woman was trying to withdraw money from the same machine, when Cox struck her in the arm with a black baton and threw her to the ground.

Police say Cox grabbed her around the neck with the baton and forced her back to the ATM machine where he threatened to cut her throat if she did not withdraw money for him.
