PSU drinking weekend: police get 311 calls

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - March 3, 2009 St. Patty's Day weekend, the third of the early St. Patrick's Day celebrations by Penn State students, generated 311 calls to police - 49 more than a year ago.

That also topped the number of calls from the 2008 weekends that were highlighted by Penn State's homecoming and a night football game against Illinois.

Police told the Centre Daily Times that responding to the incidents forced them to pay overtime when the department, which is facing a budget crunch, can least afford it.

Penn State senior Brian Godiksen says the events were a financial boon to businesses, but he put a message on Facebook reminding students to celebrate safely.
