PSU drinking weekend: police get 311 calls

Penn State students were seeing green, but police in State College are seeing red. St. Patty's Day weekend, the third of the early St. Patrick's Day celebrations by Penn State students, generated 311 calls to police - 49 more than a year ago.

That also topped the number of calls from the 2008 weekends that were highlighted by Penn State's homecoming and a night football game against Illinois.

Police told the Centre Daily Times that responding to the incidents forced them to pay overtime when the department, which is facing a budget crunch, can least afford it.

Penn State senior Brian Godiksen says the events were a financial boon to businesses, but he put a message on Facebook reminding students to celebrate safely.
