1 dead after community center shooting

LAWNSIDE, N.J. - April 13, 2009 The event was supposed to be an Easter evening get together for young people. The gunfire broke out shortly after the event began and it all ended with an 18-year-old man dead.

One man told Action News, "I had a little sister here. She called me crying, "Oh, a little boy got shot in the head."

Shot was Sergio Rivera of Camden, New Jersey. Rivera was shot multiple times and died as a result fo his injuries.

On word of the shooting concerned siblings parents and police rushed to Lawnside's Wayne Bryant Community Center around 10:40 last night. Young people had gathered at the popular meeting place on E. Charleston for an Easter evening party.

But soon after the celebration got going around 10:00 a big fight broke out inside. Witnesses arriving then heard gunfire.

Tanya Williams, who was at the center when the shooting occurred, tells Action News, "We was actually walking up to the party, and then we like went to go pay our admission and then everybody just started running away from the party, like they was fighting and shooting and stuff."

Witnesses said the party included people as young as 12 and as old as 21. Some bystanders were injured in the melee.

Lawnside residents say this isn't the first time they've heard of problems with parties at this community center. But they were especially dismayed that such deadly violence would break out on Easter Sunday.

No word yet on the identity or the age of the victim. No word as well on the status of the search for the suspect, or perhaps if an arrest has already been made.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office is handling this investigation.
