Animal control officials have no idea how the creature came to be wandering around the New York City borough.
A woman called police when the 60-pound Sulcata tortoise lumbered into her backyard.
Officials from the Bronx Zoo says none of their tortoises are missing.
Animal control officials say the tortoise is very healthy and very active.
For now, they're calling the tortoise "Shelly."
