Funerals are going green

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - May 6, 2009

At least for some funerals in Lawrence, Kan.

The city-owned Oak Hill Cemetery is setting aside space for eco-friendly funerals.

The green burials are for the dearly departed who aren't embalmed and who'll travel to the next world in a biodegradable casket.

Larry McElwain, co-owner of a mortuary in the college town, says green funerals also save a lot of green.

He says the eco-friendly burials can shave up to 75 percent off the cost of a traditional funeral.
