The Vatican has tapped Monsignor John Barres to be the next bishop of the Allentown diocese.

Barres is chancellor of the Wilmington, Del., diocese. He'll succeed Bishop Edward Cullen, who has reached the Catholic church's mandatory retirement age of 75.

Barres is 49 and a native of Larchmont, N.Y. He's been Wilmington's chancellor since 2000.

The Vatican announced Barres' appointment on Wednesday.
