Home invasion leads to rooftop chase

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - July 10, 2009 It all began around 2:17 a.m. at a home on Wingate Road.

Police tell Action News that three heavily armed men approached a man outside of his home. He ran and the bandits shot at him, just missing his head.

The suspects then broke into the home.

That's when police arrived on the scene and tried to arrest the invaders. The suspects climbed through a skylight and starting going roof-to-roof on the rowhome block.

Police called in a helicopter from New Castle County to help track the suspects down.

Dozens of homes on Wingate were evacuated as police searched.

Eventually, three suspects were taken into custody. Their names have not yet been released. A police source tells Action News that all three suspects have lengthy police records.

Officers recovered a machine gun and other weapons at the scene.

A news conference about this incident is planned later in the day.
