Airport cameras faulty during security breach

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - January 5, 2010 Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman John Kelly says the camera at a security checkpoint was streaming live images on Sunday but wasn't recording them.

That made it impossible for Transportation Security Administration workers to check an image of a man seen walking in through an exit door Sunday evening until it could view tapes from a nearby Continental Airlines surveillance camera.

The incident shut down an entire terminal at the airport and stopped flights for six hours.

The TSA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, U.S. Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) will hold a press conference at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday to discuss a letter they will send to the Transportation Security Administration calling for a series of security upgrades.

The senators were briefed on the incident by federal security officials at the airport on Monday and have been in touch with the Port Authority and Continental Airlines to gather additional information.
