Track the snow plows in Hamilton, N.J.

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. - February 5, 2010

New Jersey's Department of Transportation has a fleet of some 500 trucks that are loaded and ready to roll once the snow starts to accumulate. Add to that almost 1500 contractors who will assist plowing and salting over 12,000 miles of highways in the Garden State.

"Were already deploying additional assets to the south since it looks like the north will not need them until late and the south is getting hit the hardest," said Acting DOT Commissioner Jim Simpson.

"You've got to go home and rest in between so you're fresh and ready. You don't want to be tired driving with these things. You've got to be extra careful," said DOT plow driver Bill Reeder.

When the snow hits people are often anxious to know when their street will be plowed. Hamilton Twp. has a new way to find out by going on the township website and clicking on the icon for Snow Pal Sal.

"They can enter their street address, the number of their home it will take them to another display that will tell them, give them an estimate on when we should be there to plow their street," said Public Works Director Rich Balgowan.

GPS on the trucks lets staff in the command center know exactly where each plow is and where it's been. The public works director says all his equipment is ready to go, but with 625 miles of streets and roads to cover, it could take up to 36 hours after the storm to cover all that territory.

"Everybody's street will be plowed but they have to patient we will get there," Balgowan said.

DOT officials are recommending that you don't drive in the snowstorm. It's best to stay off the roads and let the plows do their work.
