Son rescued, father missing in Delaware River

LAMBERTVILLE, N.J. - March 21, 2010

At around 4:15 p.m., West Amwell Police say a father and his adult son were canoeing in the Delaware when they soon realized they were approaching the Lambertville Wing Dam, an area that has proved deadly to boaters in the past.

"They were paddling and paddling and it looked like they had cleared the dam, but then they slowly got turned around backwards, and right over into the white waters." Witness Marion Arnone said.

Arnone was biking along the towpath with his children when the two men went overboard. He watched as they struggled to stay afloat.

"We saw two heads and they were chasing the canoe," Arnone said.

Two other bicyclists in at the scene rescued 24-year-old Seth Baldwin and pulled him ashore.

Paramedics rushed him to a local hospital with hypothermia. He is expected to survive.

Fire and rescue crews continued to scour the Delaware for his father, 58-year-old Chris Baldwin, but the rescue was called off as night fell and the search officially became a recovery operation.

Weather permitting, New Jersey State Police will be back out on the Delaware Monday searching for the missing man.
