Pa. cities woo Google to get ultrafast Internet

PHILADELPHIA - March 26, 2010

Philadelphia got a new nickname Friday as part of its effort to bring Google Fiber to the city.

Google plans to build an experimental fiber-optic network that would deliver Internet access at speeds about 100 times faster than what most people get now.

Communities across the country are getting creative to woo Google. The city of Topeka, Kan., informally renamed itself "Google, Kansas" for this month.

Other Pennsylvania cities interested in Google Fiber include Pittsburgh and Allentown/Bethlehem, which plan to submit a joint application. The deadline is Friday.

Google plans to announce winners by the end of the year. It's not clear when the networks would be built or in how many cities.
