Police arrest barricaded Stratford man

STRATFORD, N.J. - May 1, 2010

Just after 2:00 a.m., Stratford police officers responded to a home within the 100 block of Stratford Avenue to check on the wellbeing of a female resident.

Upon arrival, police found a man to have armed himself with a handgun while menacing his wife, who was also within the home.

Stratford officers were able to safely evacuate the wife from the home and began negotiating with the barricaded man.

According to police, the suspect ignored commands and refused to surrender to police officers.

After negotiating with the suspect for nearly four hours, a negotiator convinced the suspect to surrender to the Gloucester Township SWAT Team.

The man is identified as 40-year-old David Cantara.

At around 7:30 a.m., Cantara was taken into custody by SWAT.

Police performed a subsequent search of the home and found a loaded handgun.

Nobody was injured during the standoff.

Cantara has been charged with Video Voyeurism of a Juvenile, Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, Obstructing Justice, Harassment, and Possession of Narcotics.

He was remanded to Camden County Correctional Facility in default of $175,000.00 cash bail.
