Multiple injuries after bus overturns in Port Richmond

PORT RICHMOND - May 17, 2010

It happened around 3:00 p.m. Monday in the 2800 block of East Westmoreland Street in the Port Richmond section.

The bus, with the Delaware Valley Bus Company, flipped over several times at the base of northbound I-95 avenue offramp at East Westmoreland.

Passengers on the bus told police and Action News that the driver said he had lost brakes on the bus, and he tried to get the bus off of the highway. On its way down the ramp it hit a utility pole then flipped over several times.

The passengers told police they are temporary workers who were on their way back from New Jersey.

Rescuers on the scene say two of the injuries are severe. Both of those people were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital.

The more severely injured appeared to be the 40-year-old bus driver. He was listed in critical condition.

In total, just under 24 people were aboard the bus at the time of the accident. Fourteen other passengers were also injured in the accident, but not as severely. They were all taken to various hospitals for treatment.
