Suspect arrested in Del. hatchet attack

CLAYMONT, Del. - May 20, 2010

21-year-old Thomas Cottingham of Wilmington turned himself in to police on Wednesday night. He goes by the street name 'Cannibal.'

Troopers say the 23-year-old victim met with Cottingham and another man in the parking lot of Claymont Elementary School on Monday night.

Police say while the victim was talking to the second man, Cottingham sneaked up behind the victim and hit him in the head with a hatchet.

Police say Cottingham threw the hatchet through the victim's car window.

The victim was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was treated for a fractured skull.

Investigators say they do not have an identity yet on the man who was with Cottingham.

Cottingham was formally charged with Assault 1st (felony), Conspiracy 2nd (felony) and Criminal Mischief (misdemeanor).

Upon arraignment, Cottingham was turned over to the Department of Corrections in lieu of a $11,500 secured bond.
