Del. trooper leaps from car moments before crash

WILMINGTON, Del. - May 28, 2010

Police say the trooper was investigating an accident on I-95 south on the Brandywine River Bridge in Wilmington shortly before 2:00 a.m. Friday.

Investigators say, as he was getting out of his fully-marked cruiser, he notice a car heading right for him that did not appear to be slowing down.

The Trooper then leapt from his car and onto a Jersey barrier just as the car slammed into his cruiser.

Fortunately the trooper was not hurt.

Police say the striking vehicle was a 1989 Toyota Cressida driven by Cecil Checkley, 66, of Brooklyn, New York.

Investigators say he tried to stop prior to impact, but his car slid on the wet road.

Checkley was not hurt, but a 59-year-old woman in his car suffered facial injuries and a 68-year-old man suffered minor injuries.

Checkely was cited for careless driving.
