Heart risks from common pain relievers

PHILADELPHIA - June 8, 2010

Researchers looked at the records of more than one-million Danish people with no problems reported before starting a pain reliever. Then over an 8-year period, participants were given a certain anti-inflammatory.

The drug diclofenac, whose brand name is Voltaren, was shown to have a 91% greater risk for stroke or heart attack Ibuprofen users had a 29% increased risk for stroke. Naproxen, sold under the brand name Aleve, showed no increased risk for heart problems.

Still the researchers say this study is not perfect. They were not able to isolate all the factors.
