Stolen flag returned as new flag is offered

FAIRMOUNT - June 11, 2010

A new American flag, 15 feet by 25 feet, was presented to the caretakers of the Patrick Ward Memorial Park at 24 and Aspen.

Flag manufacturer Kurt Koloseike made it all happen, by making the flag.

"It's an easy decision for us to donate this flag on behalf of flag owners and a lot of local flag dealers," Koloseike said.

The original flag that was displayed at the site for 15 years was stolen sometime overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

"I really do appreciate it. Every year we put up this flag. The flag means something to us guys; somebody took it. It's not right. Then you got good guys to give us a flag and we really appreciate this," Mark Evans of Fairmount said.

Fellow Fairmount resident Gene Rapone said he is overcome by the generosity of Koloseike.

Kurt from Gilbertsville saw Action News report on the theft and drove to Philadelphia to donate the new flag to the neighborhood.

The act generated a lot of emotion and gratitude for the longtime residents who were robbed of the flag they rallied around on patriotic holidays for years. Patrick Ward Park was named after a soldier who grew up in the neighborhood and died in the Vietnam War.

The new nylon flag retails for $1,000.

Moments after Old Glory was flying again in Fairmount, a college student suddenly appeared and returned the stolen flag, claiming to the locals it was all a prank.

The student drove off before he could be asked any further questions.

As the new flag is being displayed and the old one is stored away, the residents are just happy they have something to gather around Monday, which is Flag Day.
