2 dead in 2 drowning incidents at the Jersey Shore

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - July 5, 2010

The first incident was reported at 1:35 a.m. July 4th when a woman flagged down an Atlantic City police officer in front of the Hilton Hotel/Casino.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Emily Maldonado, told the officer that her boyfriend, Melvin A. Brown Jr., went swimming in the ocean in front of the Hilton Hotel/Casino and she was unable to find him.

The New Jersey State Police Marine Bureau and the Coast Guard were called in to aid in the search. Approximately one hour later Brown's body was located at the ocean's edge at Iowa Avenue and the beach - approximately five blocks from where he had entered the water.

The second incident happened at approximately 10:03 p.m. Sunday when the Ocean City Police Department and the Ocean City Fire Department were called to the 8th Street Beach for a water rescue. When they arrived they searched the area, and after a short time they located the victim in the area of the 7th Street Beach.

The victim was then taken to Shore Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Anton Zhmachynski - an exchange student from the Republic of Belarus who arrived in the United States on June 20, 2010. He was renting an apartment in the 800 block of 6th Street for the week.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
