Police break up flash mob in Tioga-Nicetown

TIOGA-NICETOWN - July 16, 2010

Two different incidents Friday night saw one very large group bent on violence find their plans thwarted by police.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m., dozens of teenagers thought to be part of a much larger group, suddenly gathered at the corner of Broad Street and Hunting Park Avenue.

Police, acting on information from a social networking site, were there waiting.

As quickly as the kids arrived from nearby Hunting Park, a very visible police presence sent them scattering in every direction.

Some of them didn't make it very far, going one or two blocks before returning to the scene in what appeared to be an act of defiance.

The Action Cam saw four of the kids taken into custody; however, no arrests were made.

Police, aware the group was planning on heading to South Street, the site of other recent flash mobs, had their presence there, as well.

Police say they are routinely monitoring social networking sites in order to head off these flash mobs before they begin.

One officer told Action News the reason these flash mobs happen is, 'kids being bored and acting stupid.'
