Wayne company gives heavy dose of proper tea

WAYNE, Pa. - January 27, 2011

January is National Hot Tea Month, when the industry encourages even non-tea-drinkers to give it a try.

We visited A Taste of Britain in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where they offer a complete British tea experience.

For $18.00 per person, you get a selection of tea sandwiches, pastries like Britain's scones, and your choice of tea, fresh-brewed at your table.

The shop also stocks accessories like cups and pots, plus a vast selection of loose teas and bagged varieties. Both America and britain prefer black tea.

The british tend to brew it stronger, but then cut it with milk.

Here in America, we're more likely to add lemon or honey.

Green tea is popular in Asia.

There is also white tea, and red tea is growing in popularity.

Actually red "tea" isn't tea at all but a blend of herbs which brews like tea.

Most teas contain caffeine, albeit far less than coffee.

Red "tea" and most herbal "teas" are caffeine-free.

Some teas like chamomile can help you get to sleep. Others are known for their medicinal properties, and some are credited with health benefits.

Many tea merchants offer blends with fruit or other flavorings added.

A Taste of Britain plans to stock a special raspberry blend just for Valentine's Day.

There's no need to be intimidated by loose tea.

A teaspoon is all you need to brew a cup of tea, and a couple of teaspoons can make a pot.

Put the leaves in a teapot, and add hot water, boiling for black tea.

How long you let it steep depends on how strong you like your tea.

Most experts recommend three to five minutes, and some warn that steeping longer than that will lead to bitterness with no additional flavor.

The British tend to make theirs stronger, then dilute it with milk.

Here in America, lemon and honey are the preferred additives.

A Taste of Britain is located at 503 W. Lancaster Avenue in the Eagle Village Shops.

They're open Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and on Sundays by appointment for private parties.

Dozens of loose teas are available, as well as bagged British teas and a number of imported grocery items.

Teapots and cups are also available.
