Ireland expels Russian diplomat over spy passports

DUBLIN - February 1, 2011

The Department of Foreign Affairs announced Tuesday that an Irish police investigation had concluded that Russian agents counterfeited and used six fake Irish passports based on the identities of Irish nationals.

In its statement, the department said Ireland regretted the need to expel a diplomat from the Russian embassy in Dublin. It declined to identify the official or the date when the official must leave Ireland.

Last year U.S. counterespionage officials unearthed a network of Russian spies living as U.S. civilians. Several used Irish passports as part of their cover.
