Toyota offering buyouts to cut salaried work force

DETROIT (AP) - February 2, 2011

The company says the move is not connected with a small sales drop last year or a spate of safety recalls that have hurt the company.

Spokesman Steve Curtis said Tuesday that offers were made to 629 people in its customer services and automotive operations groups mainly at the U.S. headquarters in Torrance, Calif. About 6,100 people work at the headquarters.

Curtis says the buyouts are voluntary and the company has no target number to reach.

Toyota Motor Corp. was the only major U.S. automaker to see a sales decline last year. January sales were up 17 percent.

The company says the move will increase efficiency and align the company's operations with future growth.
