High winds brings tree down in South Jersey

CINNAMINSON, N.J. - February 19, 2011

"Sick, pretty sick and I'm actually numb right now," said Jack Parry.

Homeowner Jack Parry surveyed his Cinnaminson, New Jersey home, after a 150 year old oak tree plunged into his roof around 2:00pm Saturday.

Branches broke through the windows of their daughter's playroom; cracks now line the bathroom ceiling.

No one was home at the time, and no one was hurt. But the damage to their property was extensive.

"We did have a builder who lives across the street. He said this entire half of the house will have to be replaced," explained Valerie Parry.

The Parry's explain the stability of the tree had already been compromised after crews working on the new development behind their property cut into its roots.

A tree expert had told them the tree would be stable until spring when the leaves come. But the high wind gusts brought the old tree crashing down.

Meanwhile in Limerick, Montgomery County, the gusts proved very costly for the outlets.

Stores were forced to close after vicious winds prompted power outages.

Over in Brookhaven, Delaware County, PECO crews were on the scene Saturday morning. Roads were closed for hours due to downed wires.

In Philadelphia, a lot more than a stiff breeze on Ben Franklin Parkway near the Art Museum.

The weather didn't keep people home, but it did make finding a cab more of a challenge.

"We've been trying to find a cab. We've been wandering around, flailing around trying to find a cab. Hopefully one passes by soon," said Amanda Schreffer.
