Montgomery Co. man scammed of savings

MONTGOMERY CO., Pa. - April 2, 2011

The victim's name is Richard. He says he received a call Wednesday from a man claiming to be a police officer from Montreal.

The caller said Richard's nephew had been arrested for DUI and that he'd spend 30 days in jail unless Richard paid $3,000 bail.

Richard wired money to an address the man gave him.

But it didn't end there. Richard says the man asked for more money.

It turns out the nephew hadn't been arrested at all, and was out of touch because he was running a marathon.

When it was done, Richard had sent more than $18,000 to what turned out to be an address in London.

The FBI is helping in the investigation but Richard says it's very unlikely he'll get any of his money back.
