Hatboro students pack special treats for troops overseas

HATBORO, Pa. - April 7, 2011

The students packed up necessities and treats they've collected for troops serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait.

Recess has never been so exciting and so meaningful for students at Blair Mill Elementary School in Hatboro.

Big gratitude from Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers from the Southampton Road Armory who picked up a military truckload worth of care packages hand packed along with personalized notes.

"I told them to stay safe and be careful, because anything could happen," said 5th grader Brianna Weber.

"When you're overseas, little things like this mean the world," said Sergeant Doug Clegg. "You don't have anything, and then you get a package full of little bags with quotes and stuff from home saying 'thank you', and little treats that you don't get."

And while the treats are nice, sometimes it's the little things that mean the most.

"Yeah, sometimes you run out of soap, anything that when you're out in the middle of nowhere and you can freshen up, it makes you feel a lot better," said Sgt. Clegg.

From here the boxes go to a local Vietnam Veterans Memorial service where they will pack them up and send them for free to soldiers serving overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait; a little taste of home for soldiers overseas.

Some students are hoping they will hear back from their heroes.

"I asked them what branch of military they are in, what their hair color was, if they have any nicknames and what their favorite candy was," said Makenna Hughes.

She might get a pen pal out of it, and others are hoping to one day be one of them.

"Because I get to help my country and know that everybody could be safe," said 5th grader Erick Dixon.
