Crash critically injures woman in North Philadelphia

North Philadelphia - May 14, 2011

A car careened out of control and slammed into a concrete barrier on North 17th Street near Sedgely Avenue in North Philadelphia.

The impact of the crash shoved part of the car's engine into the front seat of the car.

A 22-year-old unidentified woman driving the car was trapped in the wreckage. She was later extricated from the twisted metal and rushed to a nearby hospital. Investigators say she is listed in critical condition.

Police say the car was travelling at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. Police have not said if anything also contributed to the accident.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
