Summer Reading Game for kids

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - June 30, 2011

The Free Library of Philadelphia does its part with the Summer Reading Game, a prize-filled program that rewards every child for everything they read.

Kids under 12 get a reward for every book they read.

Teens get raffle tickets and some lucky drawing winners get major prizes.

There are also online components through the library's website.

In addition, a grant from Glaxo Smith Kline allows libraries in the city and the five suburban counties to offer Science in the City, in which certified teachers hold enjoyable classes on things like chemistry and physics.

Every library in Philadelphia has an eight-station computer lab, so your child can enjoy online reading even if you don't own a computer.

The Central Library downtown and the Northeast Regional Library are even open Sunday afternoons for your convenience. And you can connect with the summer reading game any time via the website, http://freelibrary.org.

As an incentive to visit, the site allows visitors to download up to three selections per week from a vast collection of songs.

There are also downloadable books and, yes, those count toward prizes in the summer reading game.

The program runs through August 12 at libraries citywide, but it continues online through the end of August.
