Phillies fans react to fatal fall at Rangers' game

PHILADELPHIA - July 8, 2011

At a Phillies game, who wouldn't want to catch a game ball?

"If a foul ball is coming your way, it's like an instinct thing, you've got to go for a ball," says John Janda.

But after the horrible accident at the Texas Rangers' game Thursday night, Phillies fans are thinking twice.

"I think it was just a horrible accident and you hope it doesn't happen again, and it was just maybe wrong place at the wrong time kind of thing," said Tennille Sevigny.

Shannon Stone, who was at the game with his son, plunged almost 20 feet after he caught a ball tossed by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton.

Stone died on his way to the hospital.

Moments before the Rangers' held a moment of silence for the 39 year old father at Friday night's game, an emotional Hamilton spoke publicly for the first time about the accident.

"I can't imagine how the stone family is feeling and my heart, sympathy and prayers go out to them," said Hamilton.

But could the tragedy impact ballparks across the nation including Citizens Bank Park?

"I'm still going to go out for that ball and fortunately, I will be able to catch it and I won't fall over the rail, but that's such a sad story," said Rory Sullivan.

Major League Baseball says it is looking into the incident to see if any changes need to me made.

MLB released a statement saying that it has the utmost sensitivity to the safety of all the fans. "Our players are encouraged to be fan-friendly, and we will carefully review this incident with our clubs to continue to ensure a safe environment for our fans."

"People are out here living life and enjoying themselves," said Aaron Sevigny. "Life is dangerous sometimes, and it's unfortunate, but you wouldn't want to change everything for that."
