Victim ID'd in fatal hit and run, driver sought

NEW CASTLE, Del. - August 17, 2011

The victim has been identified as 50-year-old John Brown. Police say he is a homeless man who had been in the New Castle area.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:17 p.m. Tuesday as Brown was walking in across the northbound lanes of Delaware Route 9 just south of West Market Place.

He was struck by a dark colored Honda Accord, possibly a 1994 or 1995 model, which was traveling at an apparent high rate of speed, police say.

The victim was thrown onto the hood of the vehicle and carried into the street. He then fell to the ground.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Honda Accord, which never stopped, was last seen traveling from the area northbound on DE Rt. 9.

It has high intensity blue headlights, after-market tail lights, and silver wheels.

The investigation into this crash is continuing.

The Delaware State Police are asking anyone who may have any information in reference to this accident to contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit at Troop 2 at 302-834-2630 ext 286.
