Consumer: Jeep Liberty concerns, phishing scams

January 30, 2012

We turn first to the investigation. It involves the Jeep Liberty SUV.

Federal regulators are now doing a full engineering analysis after new reports that 50 people got hurt when the air bags just suddenly inflated, even though the vehicles weren't involved in crashes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating nearly 400,000 Liberty SUVs made by Chrysler from the 2002 and 2003 model years.

Documents on the NHTSA website say Chrysler and regulators have received 87 complaints of air bags going off by surprise. Drivers report burns, cuts and bruises.

The incidents happened as the vehicle was being started and while it was being driven.

NHTSA said in the documents that Chrysler inspected the air bag control computer chip and found it fails due to a possible electrical voltage spike. The company says no incidents have happened in vehicles made after March 19, 2003.

But regulators say Chrysler can't explain that, so they are starting an engineering analysis.

Chrysler tells Action News, "We are cooperating fully...to determine the root cause of this condition."

We turn next to a new system for combating email scams.

Google, Facebook, Bank of America, PayPal and eleven other big companies have teamed up to combat the practice of phishing. They've designed a system called DMARC to better authenticate emails from legitimate senders and weed out fakes.

Phishing scams try to trick people into giving away passwords and other personal info by sending emails that look like they come from a legitimate bank, retailer, or other business.

Through DMARC, companies can also receive alerts from email providers every time their domain name is used in a fake message. They can then ask the email providers to move such messages to a spam folder or block them outright.

Work on DMARC started about 18 months ago. Starting today, other companies can sign up, too.

Google is using the new system already in both its email sender and email provider capacities.

The founders of DMARC are hope to see it more broadly adopted and eventually become an industry standard.
