Bystander shot, killed in Camden restaurant

CAMDEN, N.J. - April 27, 2012

It happened around 5:00 Friday morning at a Crown Fried Chicken restaurant on the 200 block of Broadway Street.

Police say it appears that a fight broke out between the shooter, his friend and a group of other men.

"I just heard a gunshot," said Khan Ali.

Khan Ali was working the counter at the Crown Fried Chicken on the 200 block of Broadway in Camden at 5:00am Friday morning when a wild brawl broke out between customers. Then a gun came out.

"It just started out as a big fight and everyone started getting in the middle of it.," said Ali.

"They were fighting and the next thing you know the gun had dropped, somebody else picked it up and they started shooting," said Dione Brown. "Sound like a firecracker going off, like an M80 going off inside the store," said Shane Lopez.

A 36 year old Camden man had been sitting in a booth with a woman when the fight moved their way and the gun went off. A stray bullet hit and killed him.

"They get up, they were trying to leave as the shooter begins firing shots, and this man is hit fatally as he's trying to exit the restaurant," said Jason Laughlin, Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Police have released surveillance video, and believe the shooter is the man in a gray jacket with the black stripe. They are looking for him and his friend in the blue.

They believe anyone who knows the man in gray will recognize him from the surveillance video. They say one other person involved in the fight was also shot, but will survive.

As for the man who died, authorities are not identifying him because they have been unable to notify his family. But friends called him Freddie.

"He was an older man," said Walden Lee. "He didn't bother anybody or make any kind of problem with anybody. It's terrible he was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

"People come in here to eat, people walk by and then something like this happens. It makes you nervous, like you feel you don't ever want to come down here anymore," said Jaquaya Brown.

The shooter and his friend reportedly fled the scene in a pickup truck.

Anyone who can identify the shooter or any other people shown in the video is asked to contact Camden Police.
