Man struck, killed while painting fence in NE Phila

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - May 19, 2012

Police say the 22 year old driver of the totaled car was headed westbound on the 600 block of Red Lion Road early Saturday morning when he lost control and plowed into three men painting a roadside fence for Sandmeyer Steel Company.

One of the workers died at the scene. The witness says he immediately called 9-1-1.

"The operator asked me to check his pulse. I looked at his body, he wasn't breathing, wasn't moving. I pulled his shirt back and checked his neck, no pulse," said Wheatland.

Rushing to try to rescue the 42 year old victim was an emotional experience for Wheatland who said he had just returned home from a prayer service.

The man lives across the street from the scene. His neighbor Amy Reilly says the crash woke her up.

"It was really loud. It scared the cat in the window," said Amy.

But it was the details of the deadly accident that alarmed Reilly.

"They're always working really close to that fence, and this corner is insane. Cars are always flying," Amy said.

While investigating this crash scene, police tell Action News there are no signs that the driver hit the brakes, and no signs that he had been drinking. But they say, at least, so far, he is refusing to cooperate with police.

Police say no charges have been filed.

The driver of the car and the two surviving painters were taken to Aria-Torresdale Hospital with minor injuries.

The name of the worker who died has not yet been released.
