City council approves $40M funding for Phila. public schools

PHILADELPHIA - June 22, 2012

Half of that money will come from property tax hikes and half will come from an increase in the use and occupancy tax on commercial property owners.

The $40-million is less than half of what Mayor Michael Nutter was hoping for.

City schools are dealing with a $218-million budget shortfall.

Council also voted to postpone implementing Mayor Nutter's revamped property tax system known as AVI, the Actual Value Initiative.
