Woman, 86, targeted in Hatfield Twp. grocery store theft

HATFIELD TWP., Pa. - April 10, 2014

It happened on April 1st at the ShopRite on Forty Foot Road.

"It's no respect at all. Here I am a harmless old lady," said the victim.

The victim, whom Action News is not identifying by name, says she never knew she was being targeted.

It was Senior Citizen Discount Day and police believe the suspects, a man and a woman, came to the store specifically looking for someone like her to steal from.

"She was going about her business in the store not knowing that she was actually being watched by two suspects," said Ofc. Patrick Hanrahan, Hatfield Township Police.

The suspects arrived in a gray car that may have had New York plates.

Once inside, they soon spotted the victim with her pocketbook sitting in her cart and followed her throughout the store for about 20 minutes, waiting for the right time to strike.

"They waited for the right opportunity and when the right opportunity came, they took what wasn't theirs," said Ofc. Hanrahan.

The male suspect distracted the victim by talking to her about the frozen fish. On surveillance video, the female suspect is seen reaching in the victim's pocketbook and grabbing a change purse containing $100 in cash and a Kohl's credit card.

They duo then took off. The victim went to pay for her groceries and realized her money was gone.

"I thought to myself, 'Oh how am I going to pay for this," said the victim.

A young man standing behind her in the checkout line paid the $40 she owed. In return, she gave him a big hug.

Meantime, the suspects had gone right across the street and made multiple charges on the victim's credit card, purchasing more than $1,200 in clothing, sneakers and gift cards.

The suspects are described as being in their 30s. If you recognize them, you are urged to contact Hatfield Township Police at (215) 855-0903.
