PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia region is gearing up for a hot week, so what better way to spend it than at a pool!

The city plans to open its pools, just in time to help people beat the upcoming heatwave.

Philadelphia city pools opening Monday, June 17:
Chew Pool - 1800 Washington Ave.
Hunting Park Pool - 900 Hunting Park Ave.
Scanlon Pool - 1099 E. Tioga St.

City officials kicked off the 2024 summer pool season with a ceremonial "first jump" at the pool in Chew Playground, located along the 1800 block of Washington Avenue.

All 60 public pools are expected to open on a rolling basis and will offer free swim lessons to children.

You can see a full list of when each city pool is opening at phila.gov. Pool schedules vary by location, and are based on available staffing.

Ten pools will not open this summer due to ongoing rebuild project construction or necessary capital repairs. Those pools include:

- Amos Pool
- Baker Pool
- CB Moore Pool
- Cohen (Hillside) Pool
- Cohox Pool
- F.J. Myers Pool
- Kingsessing Pool
- McVeigh Pool
- Sample Pool
- Ziehler Pool

Lifeguards Wanted

Local leaders say they are also still searching for more lifeguards this year. Pay starts at $16 dollars per hour, and you must be at least 16 years old and pass a lifeguard screening test to qualify.

The city needs 400 lifeguards in total, so Philadelphia Parks and Recreation is offering free training sessions.

The next lifeguard training session on June 22, at the Samuel Rec. Center, if you're interested in becoming a lifeguard.

While there will be lifeguards, parents and caregivers are responsible for watching their children in the pool deck. Any child under the age of eight must be within arms reach of their parent or guardian at all times when in the water.
