40-acre wildfire burning near Evesham Twp., New Jersey neighborhood 90% contained

EVESHAM TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A wildfire that was burning near a neighborhood in Evesham Twp., Burlington County was 90% contained as of Thursday.

The fire erupted Wednesday in the area of Sycamore Avenue.

Chopper 6 was over the scene where flames could be seen burning in the brush.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service says, at one point, 15 homes were threatened by the blaze. However, there was no damage to any buildings.

Officials said fire crews will monitor the situation until significant rainfall occurs.

"It makes it difficult because the material breaks, like swamps and stuff that exists out in the forest, are all dried up. A lot of the lakes are drying up," said Tom Gerber, section forest fire warden with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

That's because it's so hot and dry outside.

"We're in a historical period here of rainfall. There's been no rainfall in over a month. We've been in drought conditions on and off for the last three years," said Gerber.

And the fires aren't just in New Jersey. Firefighters have been working to put out a brush fire that began in Bristol, Pa. on Thursday in a wooded area behind Bucks County Community College.

Firefighters warn there could be smoky conditions for the next few days. An outdoor burn ban remains in effect for all of Bucks County and many other areas.
