HAVERFORD, Pa. (WPVI) -- Longtime Haverford High School football coach Joseph Gallagher was arrested over the weekend after being involved in a DUI hit-and-run accident, the Delaware County District Attorney's office confirms to Action News.

The incident happened just after 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the area of Lincoln and Fourth avenue in Prospect Park, Delaware County.

The DA's office says Gallagher was involved in a crash at that location and then fled the scene along Chester Pike.

Gallagher was apprehended by neighboring police from Ridley Township and Eddystone.

Gallagher is in his 23rd season of coaching. Haverford School District spokesperson Amanda Larsen tells Action News that Hallagher has taken a "leave of absence from the football team for personal reasons." He remains a full-time teacher in the school district.

Larsen tells Action News that former football coach Jack O'Donnell will take over the role of acting head coach in their upcoming playoff game at Conestoga.
